Maps with large bodies of water have this very unrealistic mirror plane for the water, with trees reflecting in it, even when there are no trees.
Is there any way to fix this?

If you're on PC the only way to alter the water plane is in Giants Editor.

I see, yes that's how it should be, thanks for the tip. I guess map makers just dont use the correct water plane and mirror.

Yes, it's a simple thing to do.
Also for any objects near the shore you could change the Object Mask to ff03ff causing them to make a reflection on the water surface, possibly the distance hills too.
