I turn auto save off and save regularly. As there’s no option to create a new save I make sure to save before trying anything I’m unsure of and not saving during the trying! We need a “save as’ function.

I agree the terrain tools are bad and ridiculously expensive. Removing buildings (the few you actually can) leaves the terrain a complete mess too. It’s one of a few elements of the game that don’t seem fully developed to me.

I suddenly have one if my fields full of stones too, even though they’re turned off.
