I totally agree with you gav. I'll take functionality over graphics any day. I played ET when it was a hot cartridge, before it was a hot mess.
I was also agreeing with the OP that it would be nice to have those graphics, but it isn't likely possible with their current tools.

With the new processing of Ads in-game, and the resources surrounding it, maybe they needed to make adjustments elsewhere, and maybe that's where the new pallet limit comes in.
Maybe it didn't appear in the patch notes because they were hoping most people wouldn't notice.
