Tractor Speeds

Can someone please tell me why, on certain maps, the speed of a tractor on the road drops and is a lot less than when the tractor is driven up the grass verge adjacent to the same road. The difference appears greater if a large implement is being towed.

Im guessing due to traction. Driving at high speeds or in 4wd on a tractor on the road in RL will wear down and destroy your tires.
