where is there a guide or an explanation of the screen icons and symbols for seasons,the weather ones i understand,the temperature ones i understand but every now and then a completely separate appears with trees and water drops in it,WTF, i can't find anywhere that tells me what these additional windows mean

You find it under help seasons. It means the ground and the crops are wet. If there is something like ice, the ground is frozen. When wet you couldn't harvest, but it is an option.
