For a starting strategy, I'd recommend getting potato planting and harvesting equipment as soon as possible. Potatoes are half the price of regular crops, but yields 4x as much as regular crops, so it works out to double your harvest income for a given field. The potato planters can be filled with harvested potatoes instead of seed bigbags, so there's no need to buy seed for the planters. Also, there's no need for a dedicated harvester/combine, the trailed one works just as well, albeit slower. The only downside is that potato farming requires a robust logistics capability (this means a large tipper, and a strong tractor/semi truck to pull it), though this can be side-stepped somewhat by boxing the potatoes in pallets (there's an implement in the conveyor section of the shop for that), and transporting them in flatbed trailers.
