I believe it's used as corn 'can' be used to describe any cereal crops grain. Just if you want a bit of background ;)

No it's just corn. It is really just another name for it the same as how people call canola rape, and alfalfa being called lucerne. It's just a different name for different parts of the world.

Yea I looked into it more closely, it's an American/British English thing. Main definition in British English is apparently "The chief cereal crop of a district" quite a weird use of it really. So yeah it's just different places using it differently.

Well corn production has now surpassed that of wheat and rice. It is one of the most produced crops on the planet. Not only do humans eat it, animals eat it in various forms and is the main crop for ethanol production.

Round these parts if you ask a farmer how his corn's doing, he'll either tell you about his wheat or his foot!
Don't see too much maize in the north of England, what is grown is for silage. Maize harvests tend to leave fields a blatherey mess due to our climate, it's not fit until late September usually.

We still have some corn standing in central Minnesota. We don't have mud issues like you might since the ground is frozen now :)

Call me when corn gets to $4 a bushel... because unless your running your farm lean, you aren't getting much in the way of payout on corn futures. Right now there is an over supply, much of last years harvest (2016) is still sitting in storage, waiting for the price to go up. And with limits set on ethanol production, and importers knocking on the door, farmers here in the Midwest sit and wait.
