Grass with seasons question

Post by Addictedtofs »

When it comes to grass, I have always sort of cheated. I always used a silo to store it. But that started to bug me. Now I'm wanting to do it honestly. So life history aside, how do I go about it? I know it degrades, so will I not have any for the spring? What about in the summer? I know I can cut it and leave it in the loading wagon, but won't it degrade? Should I store it under something? Or is bailing the way to go?

Hi Addictedtofs,

Grass will degrade in the wagon as well.

I always use hay to feed both sheep and cows. I have switch hay to grass mod for the cows so they will be on 100% even in winter.

https://www.farming-simulator.com/mod.p ... d_id=82830

In order to "compensate" for this "cheat" I always give hay to both sheep and cows even during the summer and Autumn.

Also, I don't know what is there hay in the silage section in FS17. I know it's a bit harder to "make" then grass but still it's far from silage. I really hope this will not b the case in FS19 so we won't have to wait for this mod.

Also 2, cows and sheep usually don't get grass in their trough during the summer as they have fresh grass in the field. :)

Hope it helps.

Thx very much for your reply. I'm on console so I won't be able to use the mod you suggested unfortunately. I gave up and stored in a silo again lol.
I really like your videos btw.

That is OK. I believe Realismus modding compensated not being able to feed cows during the winter by increasing the milk prices in winter so you should have the same price as in Summer. Still not good enough because I get stressed when I see empty grass field during the winter. :(

How I did it before this mod is a little bit stupid. I left a smaller patch of grass and baled it and fed it to the cows on the last day of Autumn. Bale better then loose because you can fit in more grass. And hope for the best. :)

I really do think that is sad that hay is same as silage and not grass. But I believe that Giants are still in shock how Realismus modding made Seasons! :D

Personally I've given up trying to give them grass at all. It feels like too much of a waste to cut a field to only give them a fraction of the grass before it rots. I haven't given my cows on Oakfield grass in 3 (or it might be 4 I cant remember) years and they're still at around 80% health.

I generally buy the silo you can store grass in as it’s only 25k and holds either 400k or 500k, cant remember which. Cows are at 96% in the second year. It makes a big difference to the milk output when they go over 90% it seems

Ohhh.

There is that Bale storage placable and it accepts grass bales. Not sure if the bales rot in there.

I believe somebody mentioned they do not rot in that storage.

We can try that. :)

It's not cheating to store grass in a silo. Many farmers store cow feed in silos. Sure, they don't store wet grass, but since I have to feed it to them, that's what I do. It's Giants' fault that we have to give them fresh grass anyway.

I am not sure about that storage. I know grass bales in normal shelters deteriorates, not sure we have that mod on consoles.

That’s why I use the silo, gives me somewhere to store TMR and wood chips too, bargain 👍

^^Me too^^ I love baling, so when I'm done I go ahead and mix my TMR and store it in the silo. Keeps me from hitting the 200 bale limit.

Sorry to hear that.

I was referring to the wet grass. And you are totally right about the Giants and feeding wet grass to the cows. I hate that part.

Also, mixing you TMR and storing it sounds like a great idea. I think I will try that in one of my series.

Thank you guys. :)

That is what I do, I get that silo and the siloking prestige version.

Max out my silo then do 8k straw, 8k silage ethier from silo or silage bale x2, then fill 16k hay from silo. Then drive around and dump that into silo to max my TMR to 500k.

Then I fill my straw, hay, and silage back to max in silo. So I have 500 k each.

The prestige siloking lets you add multiple diff fills from silo. If you use the bigger mixer trailer the mamoent 64k one you have to use conveyors and different methods to fill.

Just get the siloking prestige.

I do the same, takes no time at all to get to 500k this way, although I do 8k straw, 8k hay and 16k silage.

Why do you do that? I find that silage is harder to make than hay. And plus you can sell Silage off if you have extra.

It’s swings and roundabouts I guess. I can collect spare grass and dump it in the silage bunker, or ted it for hay, not sure which is more or work.

I find on lone oak it’s harder to see hay on the ground as the map has light grass texture when it’s cut. Although I prefer the light grass as it’s more realistic I think 😆
