update a map without losing game progress

i started playing a map then the creator released an updated version and in his description he said that i don't need to start a new game. since the creator said i don't need to restart, how do i add the update without losing my progress? thanks for any help

Just update it as normal in modhub.

it's not on modhub, it's from a third party website that i need to put into my mod folder

Same process, download it and place it in the folder, it will ask if you want to overwrite it and click yes.
