can't join my friends multiplayer

I have not played farming simulator 2017 for a while now because i can't join my friends server. I don't know if it makes a difference that he bought the game on steam and i bought it on CD. We even tried to find another server to join but we don't have the same servers listed. I just don't know why because at the start we could play together but then one day it we couldn't find each others servers. I hope someone can help us.

steam game does update automatich
cd/downlaod game (you) need to update manual from https://www.farming-simulator.com/updat ... country=nl

you need to have the same version to play together

i know i have to update, and i thought i udpated it. but it won't download. i have downloaded the patch but when i run the file i get it says that my game files are corrupt.
