Do client and server versions need to match

Just wondering if I have 1.4.4 and have not upgraded am I limited to seeing other 1.4.4 servers in the multiplayer list? Thus I cant connect to a 1.5.1 server if running 1.4.4 and if the server is 1.4.4 and I am 1.5.1 I cant connect?

Yes, both the client and server must have the same version.

Ok thank you that is what I was thinking. As I was able to play on my server yesterday still @ 1.4.4 and this AM i moved to 1.5.1 and could no longer see it in the list of serves even though it showed online.
