Multiplayer

Looking for some help on figuring out how to use multiplayer a friend and I are trying to play together but have to be in the same room on the same WiFi to get it to work but we would like to play together when he is at his house and I am at mine. I’ve tried to rent a dedicated server and I do not have enough experience/ knowledge to figure out how to get it to work. I was curious if there was a way we could do it without a dedicated server. Any help is greatly appreciated l. Thanks in advance.
