I grew up on a nice sized dairy farm in Ohio. Our cows were out all spring summer and fall. The only time we locked the herd in was during the winter freeze. It isn't very hard to get them into the barn. They really come in by themselves because silage feeding happens around the same time. If you have a couple stragglers you just make your rounds with the Gator or take a walk with the dog.

John Deere Gator is like agricultural quad but with 6 wheels or a buggy
