basically because when you place it, it only registers as one square of the shed. you you can place it almost anywhere

ok..so how does it get longer?..I fooled with it abit when it was first released.so the small shed is where yiu start with?..thanks Red G..take care...Chris

Basically you open up the help menu, with a key combo, and then it will show you all the options. (tip, have the in game help menu on)
