Modding wiki

Post by Eep »

Farming Simulator needs a wiki! https://wiki.fs-uk.com/ is OK but not very modular. I did a search for "collision" and I didn't get a basic, root page explaining what "collision" is or anything. The first result is =collision]Editing Mod Mass and Weight plus the Collision Box which doesn't even have the collision mask table and the images (figures it calls them and they're just links--not embedded images) it DOES have are all broken. Not very user-friendly...

Then there's the Farming Simulator Wikia but it's more of an overview wiki though it does have an extensive list of vehicles, tools, etc. and not really directed towards modding.

https://lswiki.de/ is pretty empty (3 pages and German only), https://wikiwiki.jp/fsj/ is another overview (Japanese only), https://www.ign.com/wikis/farming-simulator/ is a 1-page "guide" (to nothing), https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Series:Farming_Simulator is for general technical info.

And, lastly, of course there's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farming_Simulator but that's yet another overview.

Contrast even the Giants Developer Network documentation with the Second Life LSL Portal which is much more user-friendly with basic info that leads to more complicated and extensive info and examples. This is what I think the FS modding/LUA wiki should be like.

GDN is, and I will keep saying that, a user unfriendly joke. If you know how it all works ingame you get what is on GDN... if not, it's unusable. The PDF guide is so outdated it is also a joke. Yet Giants demand 100% quality mods to be submitted. I won't go too *zensiert* into the rudeness/impoliteness of the modhub testers, or the joke demands they have, like making turn signals light up when activating the light. Any excuses they do it for free etc are not arguments for being rude, impolite and/or incorrect about the models they are testing. At one point I decided to just let it go, but with FS19 I decided to vent this as often as possible until Giants get so sick of it they either ban me for stating the obvious or get us finally usable modding info and modder friendly modhub support. Anyway, back to the real topic...

I like the idea of a wiki, but modders are already spending a lot of time getting mods out, would they invest time in getting the wiki thing together? I'm sure they're like the rest of us, with lives, other hobbies etc, plus do want to play the game too, instead of just modding?

Yea, like anything, it would take time and effort to contribute to the wiki. I mean I probably spent a good year editing the Second Life LSL Wakka wiki before it changed to MediaWiki. Probably FS-UK's wiki is the best to use since it seems to have the most detailed/technical info at least. The problem is trying to sort out all the differences between FS versions. There would have to be a general info section about, say, vehicles, then for each tag section (<storeData>, <base>, <lights>, <attachable>, <animations>, etc), indicate the changes for each FS version.

Ugh...way too much work and really Giants should have all this info already documented. I'm still trying to determine where everything is defined but until the FS19 LUA docs are released, I have to rely on FS17 which is sketchy.
