A few times I did this ...
I used the quote button (to trigger the alert) an then deleted the "automatically generated quote" ... not sure if that works though!?

Sometimes I either quote the person or I just use the @ symbol and type their name like I'm addressing them.

Nothing wrong with quoting in my book, that's what its there for.

I think where it becomes an issue is when quotes get nested. If you quote someone who already quoted someone else, but you're only referring to the quote you're doing of the latest person, the forum software still sends a notification to the nested person quoted by the other person (wow that's not confusing at all lol).

So, if Jim quotes Bob in a reply, the forum notifies bob that Jim quoted him. Now if Sally quotes that post by Jim, it also includes the quote of Bob that Jim made. Well, even though Sally is only talking to Jim, the forum doesn't know that, it just knows that there is a nested quote of Bob, so it notifies Bob as well, but Sally isn't talking to Bob at that point. As the thread continues and more quote nesting occurs, people can start getting tired of getting notifications that they're being quoted when the conversation is not about their quote at that point.

^^ Can't quote notifications be turned off? If so, that may be able to eliminate the issue of repeated quote notifications.

Another forum I am active on has a rule not to quote the post above yours. It is assumed that you are talking about recent posts.

If you are directly responding to a post on another page or far removed from your post, it makes more sense to quote.

But the quote alert in this forum seems very useful and encourages quoting.

W1der wrote: Fri Jan 27, 2017 10:21 am Some topics in the forum is getting quite long ... and a bit hard to follow.

I have always thought that using the "quote function" makes it easier to carry and follow multiple discussions, within the same topic.
However ... lately I have been told to avoid using this function, as this person felt that it "cluttered" the threads ... :confusednew:

I am having a hard time "taking this argument in" ... :blushnew:

The only time I felt that the "quote" makes a "mess", is when multiple forum members are "quoting" a post that contains pictures (as these pictures tend to take a lot of room on the screen).
When using the "quote" for posts containing pictures, one could easily delete the "picture" to avoid this ... :this:

I would like to have "yours opinion" regarding this ... to make it easier for me to come to a personal conclusion, as to "what is better" ... :hmm:
Help me think straight! ...
I think the quoting button is pretty useful tbh haha.

If you are quoting multiple people. You can delete the majority of it to leave just the latest message that you are replying to and then it doesn't look like a mass quote. Also makes your post tidier AND cuts down on the size of thread scrolling.

This is what is do. I also try to scale the quote down, to include only the part of the quote I'm addressing.
