This is a question for real farmers that grow wheat

Post by Erica Von » Sat Jun 24, 2017 5:50 am

Say I kind of have a question for you real farmers out there concerning wheat.
Have you ever considered selling your wheat by mail order?
We have just kind of ventured into that and for the record I am not trying to sell our wheat on the forums.
Just kind of giving out a idea of what we have been doing.
We have been selling our organic wheat for 85.00 for a 5 gallon pale.
We sell as of last month 297 of them via mail order just going on word of mouth atm sort of a new way to sell the wheat as wholesale prices or so low we feel like we are
giving it away at the prices they are willing to pay. And we do next to nothing too it except put it in a 5 gallon food grade bucket and ship it ups ground.
So has anyone tried this before?

Something intresting we received a order for 5000 units of wheat sending it too a food bank in New york city. We have to have a special arrangement with ups now have them send a few of there big trucks to pickup this order.
I never thought we would ever get this kind of order. Orginally this order came from the gsa. Which i will still need to verify this order with them before we actually ship.

What kind of guarantees can you provide?

How do you certify:
- no contamination [i.e. dirt, rats, ...]?
- how dry the grain is?
- no signs of germination?

How do you package it?

Note: I like the idea of direct selling, as this cuts a whole part of the typical supply-chain + transport, which should be applied to many farming products.

I can in no way see how that can be done for human food consumption. Just no.

You are saying that you are selling wheat out of 5 gallon buckets for $85. We can barely get $4 a bussel if we are lucky.

"Organic" is nothing but a huge marketing ploy. Most people aren't truly certified. The ones that are, cut corners. The weeds grow uncontrolled because they don't use herbicide. If u can get $85/5 gallon bucket, to uneducated people, then more power to ya. I did see it at Cheyenne Frontier Days last week. A guy was selling "Wyoming Wheat" for $60/5gal. A "special" they were running for the event. Heck, maybe I should try it! Put 1,500 acres @ 50bu/acre into 5 gal pales? Might take awhile.
