How do you create a mod?

What software/application do you use to create and shape a mod? I've always wondered

first and foremost u need GE (Giants Editor).. lots of places have 3d models available so in these cases u would need to convert it to an i3d file for use in GE.. there is also a slew of prefab stuff already set up for GE which just needs imported.. if u wish to create your own stuff from scratch then u would need a 3d modeling program like Blender and there r respective programs to create your own textures but I'm not familiar with these as ive yet to try my hand at making my own textures

Okay thanks Jessi. I told my friend about modmaking and he said we should try our hand at making Ford tractors. Lol

I recommend Blender for the original creation of the mod. Tons of tutorials, plus its free. Notepad++ is useful for scripts, paint.net and GIMP 2 for textures, and of course GIANTS editor

For the most part, unless I'm doing an edit, I create the 3D file from scratch. The xml files, however, can be copy and pasted and renamed. You do have to change the nodes, names, and change the scripting some, but for the pallet I'm making it was almost a direct copy and paste. So will the smaller utility trailer. When editing a mod, for the most part you can just use the i3d and may have to change some nodes

I forgot all about notepad++.. it really is one of those things that makes working with the xml files so much easier.. I have mine set to open all xml files with ++ so I guess I just forget that its there

If you create an account on GDN you will also get access to the Download section, where amongst other stuff you can also download the 'Modding for Dummies' book (called 'Modding eBook PDF') which provides some useful information as well.
