I bet it's to help lower compaction by spreading out the weight a little more.

A local farmer in my area I believe has a set of those on the front of his John deere s680 combine.

No way. Tracks are far superior to tires in almost every way. Going with a tire that wide doesn't really add a whole lot to the contact patch on the ground. All you add is an extra foot or so of width but it is still only a couple inches front to back on the ground. Where as with a track it's the full width of the track and then a couple feet long front to back. The downside is that they are rather expensive compared to tires, but with those new titans I wouldn't be surprised if they were more expensive than a set of tracks. Then you have to be a little more careful where you go with those because it isn't like you can take off an outer set of wheels all around.
