I have always bought my FS games directly from GIANTS website.

For FS19 I might go with a STEAM download.
Mainly to be able to show my STEAM contacts that I am online and playing FS.

This is a question to anyone that got a STEAM version of the game.
Did you have any bad experience with FS17 ?

I did 15 on Steam and it worked just fine. I would have done 17 as well, but my machine didn't have the specs to run 17. I ended up on XB1 for 17. I've got a new machine which should be able to run 19, so I'll go with Steam.

I have had no issues.

You can turn off auto game updates in steam.
