There’s definitely some of those, but there’s also a lot of lemons, like a local Deere 8320 PS which had problems I believe from (or at least for the last few years) factory and the local dealer couldn’t figure it out, (keep in mind I want to say it was split over a dozen times by this point) and they brought out a Waterloo engineer to fix it. Turns out something never was assembled right. (Apparently this tractor nearly was a murderer, by going into park on the road, thankfully no where near top speed) so there’s definitely some exemplary and dud machines.
Dairydeere wrote: Fri Mar 12, 2021 10:07 pm We demoed a Challenger 1042 with the variable transmission, and the guy who runs our liquid manure tank ran it for a day, and he told my dad the Challenger was a superior tractor to the Deere 8295R we had recently gotten for it. Not sure how much life you get out of that type of transmission on a manure tank, but our 8R on the manure tank only runs it if it's under warranty since you can tear an IVT apart running it hard on a 9500gal tank
I know a lot of custom chopping and manure haulers run Fendt’s (which the 1000 Challengers are the economy version of the 1000’s) and not to low hours (they also have very good warranties and service plans last I checked/heard (main reason Mike Mitchell and co. Keep running their far from perfect Ideals)

The same thing can happen to a vario

lol

We run a bunch of JD powershifts, and they're indestructible. Beyond regular maintenance, we don't have much that we do to them. Gotta watch out for the early ones built from 95 to 97, hard shifting between 12 and 13. Other than that, they're awesome.

And the infamous 9RX hard shift. Which I think they finally have a repair for I believe.
Case IH, But the one advantage Vario has though is that it would be fully removed and replaced on try #1.

Also does anyone know of a good wheel config tutorial? Fendt Vario 700’s look nice on row crops.

I would say most everything has kinks worked out and is nearly indestructible, but then someone would release something and have a fiasco like the Select-O-Shift or on road truck emissions...

Our Steiger shifts hard on some gears, but that is from switching clutches, which happens on our Magnum too

Vario has no clutches... but then again people like leaving them in high doing tillage... good design =/= 1diot proof sadly...

Actually it doesn’t (ignoring the PTO), uses unclutched gearing for high and low range, and then uses the hydraulic motor that it uses for low speeds and to make it direct drive at higher speeds to reverse simply by reversing flow.
Case IH shoves 4 clutch packs (probably has something to do with seat warmers driving, and not risking them breaking it) and not sure what Deere does.

Almost every tractor has a clutch to disconnect the transmission from the engine, except for some little hydro tractors

Not sure 66hp is little... (4066R)
And going over to Fendt’s site to look for clutch specs right now.

To be fair even a 8400R or 380 MAgnum is...
And just looked at Fendt’s how a Vario works and a how to drive a Fendt video and it does have a clutch, but it isn’t used in normal operation (I believe, I saw one source claiming that it is used for reversing, but it also was a general CVT article)
I think that may be part of the reason they’re semi common on silage piles as those can eat PS’s up shifting (and not all piles are circle friendly.)
