I must do some more testing.
But since doing this test I have been running my screen on 144Hz (again) and there is a big difference.
FS wont be running with screen set to 144Hz though, there is to much "going on".
I can not really define what the issue is, but it is not "smooth".

I am not sure what is worse, the big chunks of frame drops at 60Hz or the micro stutter at 144Hz.
But as vehicles also has issues when running on 144Hz I wont use that setting anyways.

I will set my screen to 59Hz again and do some more testing.

Edit:
So I kept walking down this road...

I can also set my screen to 120Hz (60x2=120) ... :hmm:

Guess what ... mayor difference when setting the FPS to "free", I get a rock solid 120Hz and my game is smoother than ever (except for animals animation).
Also vehicle speed does not seem to be any issue as it is with 144Hz setting.

Screen set to 120Hz and game locked to 60FPS ... stutter!

This has only been short test sessions.
I will need to try this more to be sure about these result!

OK ...

I do not know why but my game performs a lot better with screen set to 59Hz than on any other setting.
I would rather play with it at 120Hz because that is a lot better for my eyes, but there is still som stutter at times, and with it set to 120Hz there is still less stutter than on 60Hz (as long as the FPS stays "good").

I realize this is an old thread, but I had tons of stuttering with the framerate dropping down to 10-20 fps in some places. It made some of the custom (modded) maps with a lot of trees unplayable. According to Afterburner, when the framerate dropped down below 30 fps the GPU was stuck in idle - running at ~700 MHz instead of the normal 1418 MHz - with 100% utilization, meaning it was supposed to throttle up but didn't.

After updating my Geforce driver to 391.01 the stuttering is completely gone and the game runs at 60 fps most the time. It still struggles with lots of lights on at night, but that's always been the case with this engine.

According to Nvidia it is a known bug for the 390.x series of drivers to get the GPU stuck in power save mode with OpenGL games. Since I've never seen it happen with any other program and FS is still a OpenGL game at heart, I can only assume that's what happened. Prior to the 390.x drivers I never had serious performance issues with FS17, so I can only summize that at least for me the problem was that (now old) driver.

Why are you playing it in open GL? It plays in directx for me.
