Please help - PS4 multiplayer with friend impossible?

My father and I were always able to play FS17 online with our PS4’s (and confirmed again tonight that we still can do so). But no matter what gyrations we try, we cannot see each other’s multiplayer games in FS19. Back in FS17, it seemed that a PS4 friend’s game would be sorted to the top of the list so it was easy to find, but now what we see is a list of something like “128 of 1115 games”, and there’s no sign of a friend’s game, and apparently no way to see games beyond the subset that are shown, so I don’t know if the problem is that my friend’s game is not in the subset that’s been shown to me, or what. Are we missing something, or does this just not work right anymore in FS19?

I’m very, very discouraged about this, for reasons that I won’t go into here.
