Grass Yields ? ? ?

Post by HC1Gunner »

If you have a field planted to grass, if you fertilize the field, do you get higher grass yields?

Yes. It is also shown in the menu if you have gras activated. After you have mowed it it's getting set back to the first fertilization state. And be Aware to only mow in the 2nd growth-state as it gives you another bit more...

I"m between a rock and hard spot, as I have (2) fields that are planted to grass by the author of the map, and you can't see the state of fertilization, as it shows them as needing to be plowed. I turned periodic plowing off, but it did not make any difference. I guess I will have to plow them, and re-plant to grass.

You can select what to show or not by clicking on lime, plow, fertilize or weed. Just turn plow off.

Walk in to the field and the field info box should pop up telling you the fertilisation percentage and whether it needs lime or ploughing.

If you plow the field and replant you get a 10% yield boost.

With grass? For sure? In 17 the ploughing requirement was reset after the first cut of grass and stayed off as long as the field was in grass. Was this changed in 19?

I don't think it resets when you mow in FS19.

It doesn't reset on 19. But once the field has been plowed, it stays in that state. Also. I have noticed once I have "limed" my grass fields. Even after harvesting/cutting 4 times, line is not needed.

Thanks for clarification. Seems arbitrary sometimes how the details of these systems are changed between iterations.

Liming grass is a waste of lime... as in, there is no "needs lime" yield penalty for grass. As you noted, if the fields needs plowing, plowing and reseeding will improve yield.

If it works for you, then that's cool.

I have noticed improved yields from a grass field with lime vs. a grass field that required it.

this is an a lot of discussion for something that can be figured out simply by looking at the in game map and reviewing the field details.

Not all 3rd party maps seem to work the same with the game. I never bother plowing, I modern farm like most farmers do no-til. You can take any map, even the vanilla maps, and from the get-go turn off plowing, but the first time you harvest you still still have to plow at least one time before its actually disabled in the game. I never have had plant grass on field, I can usually find enough meadows to mow to get the needed hay for my livestock. But my map only has one small meadow, but the author created the map with (2) fields growing grass. The whole thing is kind of misrepresented by Giant anyways, because farmers and ranchers don't grow grass fields for hay, depending on what type of livestock they are feeding, hay fields are combination of clover and one the many different types of alfalfa there are.

Having not planted grass before, I just wondered if its yields could be increased through fertilization, and I appreciated everyone's comments.
