Chicken not laying eggs

I am on Felsbrunn, seasons, starting from scratch, hard mode and have chickens
When they have 1 ton of food they lay eggs, but after a couple of days when they have 977 kg of food they stop laying eggs
If I fill upp to 1 ton they start again.
I thought they would lay eggs until they run of food.
Is this the way it is supposed to work, or do I do something wrong?

I'm guessing you have a rooster.

Hens lay eggs. To get chicks, get a rooster. Ideal is 1 rooster per 8 hens. The chance of breeding decreases with less roosters. If the hen is brooding no eggs are produced.

No rooster
It seems it is the extended finance mod that causes this. I have not had a problem with chickens since I removed the mod.
