256x map in discussion stage

Post by Richard Dower »

I was on Farmer Minn's live stream and a map maker joined his party chat, apparently he and some other modders are considering creating a 256x map on PC

:shock:

How much RAM would be needed ?...apparently it takes 75 minutes to cross the map, and I thought 64x map was bonkers.

That's 32 real life kilometres across. Would be awesome, but making it with any kind of quality would take years and years, and I doubt the Giants engine would be able to run it regardless of the pc specs.

No, standard map is 2x2 km.

A 256x map is 256 times larger. So instead of 4 square km, it is 1024 square km. And the square root of 1024 is 32.
Hence 32km.

If a standard map, Ravenport, is 2x2 km.
And a 4x map is 4x4 km.
That means that a 256x map is 256x256 km, right?
If what I said is right, then it would take just over 5 irl hours to drive from the left world border, to the right world border.

No no no...

Standard map: 2x2km = 4 square km
4x map: 4x the size of Standard map => 4*4 = 16 square km (square root of 16 = 4km, so 4x4km)
32x map: 32x the size of Standard map => 32*4 = 128 square km (square root of 128 = approx 11,3km, so 11,3x11,3km)
256x map: 256x the size of Standard map => 256*4 =1024 square km (square root of 1024 =32km, so 32x32km)

All I can say is you'd probably need a 9900k with an RTX Titan to run the thing. I honestly think giants engine doesn't scale up well with bigger maps.

Would deffinatly need a nice rig. And a map this size would frankly be dumb for solo play. Load/sync times on multiplayer could be an issue...

Interesting project, curious to hear if they actually make it and if it works well...

I think fs would crash just loading the map. Even with a NASA computer it would take a literal century to load.

that's insane.. and honestly.. as was stated.. I doubt there would be any real detail to it.. but I could be wrong.. either way u would still have the limitations of Giants Engine as well as the obvious over taxation on an otherwise nice PC for no real reason.. ive not played any of the really big ones but I did try out a big one in fs17 (it was bigger than 4x but I don't remember how big it actually was) and it was redunkulas.. I set the cruise control with gps just to travel around the map while I browsed youtube and stuff.. it really felt all too pointless.. if I wanna drive that far ill play ATS lol

EDIT - after thinking about it a bit, I don't think the performance of the pc would be greatly impacted (talking about the PC, NOT Giants Engine here, the engine being able to handle it will be a matter of debate until the map is released if it ever is).. at least not at first.. when I got my first pc to play fs17 on, it wasn't very powerful.. but when I went to play RSV by SOMS, it only took marginally longer to load initially but otherwise was no more taxing on my entry level gaming pc as any other map.. as long as there isnt loads of stuff cramped together super tight like dense forests, equipment, bales, etc, I don't think it would matter so much.. I think the trouble would begin during crop growth transitions.. I think that one thing is what would bring even a good gaming rig to a standstill.. maybe some issues during syncing for MP but I don't think so as I think that has more to do with the amount of people on the server than anything else

my experience is that the biggest load on the GPU is items on the map, ie.trees, buildings, bales, tractors, loose straw, etc. As the maps get bigger there are more items scattered about. Large open fields don't typically strain the GPU much, but small details do.

They actually made the map happen, sadly Giants engine doesn´t allow for a high enough resolution on crop density images, so it could be made to actually work. But its there and it runs.
