To fertilize or not to fertilize (grass/hay fields)

Post by Bryan83 »

As the poll asks, do you fertilize your grass fields for improved hay yield, or do you just kinda take it as it comes naturally?

Nothing but fertilizer. I don’t even know if there’s any grass underneath it all anymore

With Seasons I even spray the field. Sometimes I wonder how my animals survive...

Manure/Slurry/Digestate once a year if available. Otherwise, just let it grow by itself.
I get so much grass on Lone Oak anyway, I have to sell it at the BGA.

I used to put one stage there, since vanilla game has two stage fertilization and after mowing you already get one stage.

But now in seasons... there are tough choices:
1. Three stage fertilization (need for double fertilization).
2. Weeds
3. Need for lime and plowing

I have not decided yet, how much is worth to put in there and no info how much it really affects the outcome.

MrSealyP did a grass vid on this.

From what I remember, the fertilising did make a difference whereas plowing and lime made such a small variation it was not worth it.

I do fert with what is available at the time.

This piques my curiosity. Now when you say what's available at the time, do you exclusively use animal based, or will you use dry/spray chemical fertilizers also?

I'm a dairy farmer, so putting slurry on grass fields is the easiest way to rid myself of it. Just like real life.

You put slurry on a grass field irl? We only do that to a hay field we aren't going to use anymore because it compacts the alfalfa with manure and ruins the field especially if we knife it in.

I'm referring to my ingame farm and real life farming in the UK. Catch a watch of Tom Pemberton farms or something like that.

You must put it on a different ratio or not use that field for awhile then afterwards. I don't need to go watch YouTube from when I can see and talk about it from my real life experiences.

They put slurry on the field end of winter begin spring when the field has dried a bit and then first mowing is end spring begin summer around here. A lot off slurry is being injected here.

Is slurry something different than liquid manure? Because farmers definitely spray liquid manure on their grass fields here. It is really the only thing most farmers here do to their grass fields, they spray them with liquid manure, and mow or forage them.

European practice. I think it’s popular there cause they don’t have the massive corn acreage like we do to apply it to. We have done it before immediately following third cutting and put on real thin giving it as much time as possible to break down so you aren’t bailing it next time. Kinda of rolling the dice for the reasons you stated though more out of necessity than normal practice.
