Straw without grain?

I am trying to do a new save focussed in animals rather than crops but straw is missing from the mix. I have a meadow to do grass and hay, but I don’t want to do a field and harvesting for straw if I can avoid it. I know I can buy bales from the shop and some salepoint mods sell loose straw, but is there a way to create it without also running a combine? Can a field of wheat be made into straw with a mower or something like that?

Failing that, what is the most economically viable mod approach to buying straw? The edge multi sale point upcharges loose straw and I feel like buying shop bales at twice what I can sell them for isn’t sustainable either.

If I don’t use straw for my cows, what is the impact? Does it just cause them to make slurry instead of manure?

Yes, you can mow wheat and get straw.

I would recommend oats fully fertilized because you get a better yield for straw than wheat and barely

If you're on Medicine Creek map, you can grow Soybean for straw and feed.
With the straw harvest DLC coming out soon, I think we might even see more ways to get straw/hay and more use of them.

I didn't think the fertilizer did any thing too the straw, only the yield of the crop.

Well irl, it would give you a better stand and a bigger steam, so that would give you more straw, but idk if the in game physics are that detailed.

Need mr. Sealyp to test it. Mow the crop with fully fertilize and no fertilizer.

It is depending on the map. But by default the amount of straw you get is the same for all cereal crops (wheat, barley oat). By default it is 36800 liters per ha.
Like crop yield, you can double this amount by fertilizing, plowing, lime spreading and so on.
