Does Anyone Still Use Plows?

Post by dogwalker1 »

Not talking about for creating / extending / merging fields... I mean just to satisfy plowing requirements.

Since the introduction of subsoilers into the FS series it seems plowing has become obsolete, because subsoilers satisfy the in-game plowing requirement considerably faster with considerably less horsepower needed. The plowing requirement is satisfied in a fraction of the time with much less cash outlay needed for tractor power. But is this realistic? Maybe it is - I don't know, I'm not a farmer - but to me subsoilers feel like they were implemented in FS mainly as a step-down in difficulty (read grind) for those who don't want to be bothered with the time and tedium of plowing.

Does anyone still use plows just for realism in-game? To actual farmers, irl would you put the plow away for good after creating a field and just use a subsoiler forever after?

I'm playing on 4x maps (Kleinhau and Eiersholt), and only use the Kverneland I-plow..... and just one of them :)
It might take me a minute or 500 to plow, but it is a very relaxing job to do, and besides, i got fields on rotation, so i don't have to plow every field at the same time ;)

Yes I still use Ploughs to satisfy ploughing needs in the game. Especially since we've seen some nice Plough Mods coming out that offer great alternatives to the base game ploughs and offering some larger size and width options over what the basegame has. Initially yes the 8m Cultiplow was the go to for subsoiling and remove the "Needs Ploughing" status of fields. However now thanks to Mod Makers we have some bigger and better dedicated ploughing options, that also have the handy "Allow Create Fields" option natively, which you couldn't do with the subsoilers unless you used another mod.

I used the big Salford once to plow under grass fields.
IRL their used to bury residue in situations such as corn on corn to help lower disease pressure, or bury grass to help it decompose faster.
And in hillier parts of the US rollover plows are used to combat tillage erosion (soil slowly working It’s way down hill everytime it’s move by a disk, cultivator, etc) by throwing it uphill.

In game I run the Case IH Ecolo-til 2500 inline minimum till ripper, or chiesels.

In most parts of the US you won’t find a traditional moldboard plow being used. Mostly farmers use subsoilers now.

Actually it’s either Chiesel plows, V-ripper, inline rippers, no till, vt’s, and a few other regional options.
And moldboards are still quite popular in certain parts of the US.

I just thought it would be easier to group all shanked rippers into one category rather than listing all of the names of them.

Here is what we call a plow here in the Louisiana/Mississippi delta region. Never seen one of those weird sideways plows in my life down here. Really wish we had one of these for fs19. Right now I am using the john deere 40' chisel mod for my plowing.

It’s funny how different regions call implements different names. Where I’m from, a chisel plow is really like a v shank ripper to other people. I haven’t seen a moldboard plow used in over twenty years.

Ive turned the periodic ploughing off but use the Lizard subsoiler for field creation as it seems to have the best size to speed ratio.

Everyone uses chisel plow around here. Irl you can create a field with it or even a disc of you hit it a couple of times.
1300 acre farm, finish out just about 10,000 hogs a year, 200 cattle, and xbox one and pc user.

To me they are both different, if you watch any of the farmers on YouTube and compare the equipment they use, lots of variety, mostly based on the crop and soil type

Nope, just like real life there’s way better options that are way better for the ground, the environment, and time crunch. I know some people use them still but they kinda went the way of the threshing machine

^this, we offset disc old pastures and wet corn fields in the fall to jump start rotting. Hopfully giants changes up the tillage classification because currently it’s like grouping sedans with semis because they drive on roads

I can’t say I’ve ever heard that one.

And for tilling under grass for a new grass, in the old “New Holland Grassland Manual” you burn down in late summer with chemical, disc it down multiple times, and then plant in the spring.
