Multiplayer problems. Any ideas?

So my cousin and I are trying to play multiplayer. First, he wanted to help me on my farm I play usually as single player. He would get to 29% synchronization and it would get stuck. Just to try something, he hit “B” on his xbox controller, and it will spawn him under the map.
So we gave up that idea and started a new game for the both of us to play assuming it was something related to my save. We played fine for about 2 hours then he was randomly kicked off. When he tried to rejoin my hosted game, it would do the same thing as before. This seems to be related to “progress” or how much we have played a particular save. Any ideas? We’re stumped...

Ps: we’re both playing on PC. (He uses an Xbox controller on pc)
