Garbage Collection

Is this a new thing in version 1.4? I don't ever recall seeing an emergency Garbage Collection in my real time log before, now I see it almost every time I play. What is it actually doing?

A quick google search tells me it's automatic memory management, but it seems like every time this shows up in my dev console it is accompanied by a drop in performance. (at least momentary)

If I can I'll post a screenshot of the actual text later tonight of what it says.
