"Save Game" not working when game is paused

On multiple occasions, I've re-loaded a save game to find I've lost significant progress in the game. I think I've now found the reason why.

If I pause the game (Pause / break key) before opening the settings windows (Esc key), and using "SPACE| Save game" - I get the save game loading icon, but the game does NOT successfully save progress.

I can verify this by opening the console.

When I click save and the game IS NOT paused - I get the console entry "Game saved successfully" - after the save wheel has finished

When I click save and the game IS paused - I get no console entry - and clearly the save has not been completed

However, I get no warning the game has not saved successfully.

I often the quit the game with Alt + F4 (another thing from FS17 that bugs me... why when I use the in game "Exit game" button - does it automatically reload the game splash screen??) - having clicked the save button, but without the game having saved my progress.
