Post by Phila »

Just some musings and advice for those interested in reasonably accurate role play set in 1950s UK.

This period sees farm horses finally being phased out and there are still farms running binders and theshers (tractor powered) and even the self propeled combines might be dropping grain into bags not bulk tanks. Hay and straw might still be being stacked loose in ricks. Manual labour is still very important eg hand picking potaoes.

Though some farms speciaised in livestock (or only had land suitable for sheep) most lowland farms were 'mixed' with cereals and livestock, some farms also grew potatoes, grew turnips and swedes as fodder (usually hand picked) , some add beet to that mix and some some semi specialist field vegetable growers. Some dairy and pig farms start to become specialised and bigger.

The listings below assume a more cutting edge mixed farm in the late '50s that is max mechanised. There are as there always is outliers of guys adopting European or US ideas and kit.

Tractors
Generally sub 50hp, no 4WD, no cabs or rollover bars. FYI as - in my view - the HP requirement allocated to implements is a bit random and not always realistic, you might go into the xml files of these and tweak up the HP figure to give you more flex in choice of implements.

https://fs19.net/farming-simulator-2019 ... ajor-v1-1/ 38 HP Fordson

https://www.farmingsimulator19.com/farm ... -wip-v1-0/
45hp IH

https://www.modhoster.com/mods/massey-f ... -95x-e-65x
MF95 70hp but in UK more often same shaped smaller MF65 with 45hp

http://www.farmingsimulator19mods.com/f ... -0-0-fs19/
23hp Little grey fergy - it was everywhere!

https://www.kingmods.net/en/fs19-mods/deutz-f1l514
A more exotic UK choice... Deutz 15hp

http://www.farmingsimulator19mods.com/n ... v1-0-fs19/
48hp Nuffield . Called POS on mod but think a PM4 in the UK.

http://www.fsmods17.com/fs19-farmall-m-v2-0-0-0/
Farmall. In UK of course only the 'normal' aka row crop wheel set up. Was made in Uk as well

https://www.kingmods.net/en/fs19-mods/J ... _80_SERIES
63hp JD . Bad new Green fanboys - first proper imports of JDs to UK was in 60's but we might allow some direct imports...

http://www.farmingsimulator19mods.com/cat-d7-v1-0-fs19/
Cat D7 . Included because minus the blade this is the kind beast used on heavy work such as deep subsoiling/mole ploughs, heavy ploughing, opening up old grass land as new cereal fields etc.

What are we missing?
- Fiat crawlers eg Fiat 55 (FS17 has one) The Fiat 605c in the game is a good sub.
- David Brown eg a 50DT

Transport
Sadly we are missing a 1950s series 1 Landrover and otherwise the farm runaround would have been a standard 1950s car/estate aka 'station wagon'.
Also missing very common British Bedford Ms lorries (that's a 'truck' American viewers) and similar.
UK farms did not/do not use trucks as field vehicles as they do in the USs and rarely owned their own, with grain and livestock being picked up by contractors and taken to grain merchant, railhead etc. Rail still moved a lot of material.

At least this Fiat is European

A US Chevy but a compatible look to some Uk trucks of the time

Combines
Really need a 1950s Massey Harris. FYI - the lovely Fahr M66 combine mods , towed and normal, are 1960s not 1950s...

Neds work but keep at it please!

East european but very similar to 1950s western combines
5m header is way over top 3m more like it!

Nice grain trailer, Ransomes were a huge names in UK implements and kit:

Implements/Cropping
Btw the Grey Fergy pack has tons of stuff that is right for 1950s. Only wheat was planted in the autumn, but barley and oats and everthing else is spring planted. No oilseed rape, and UK is not a 'row crop' country but 'precision drills' used for beet and some vegetable crops. The plough is king. Spraying and fertiliser is not in common use. No straw choppers on combines so straw was used or burnt in the fields. So once harvest over and straw is gone, spread the manure (not slurry as animals all on straw):
https://www.modsls17.com/trailer-pack-v1-2-0-mod/

Then in with the plough, though might run some tines over the stubble to promote weed growth ahead of the plough to then bury them.
https://fs19.net/farming-simulator-2019 ... plow-v1-0/ this is more a new ground turf buster for back of a crawler...

Ransomes plough
http://www.farmingsimulator19mods.com/f ... 0-3f-v1-0/

Note the long furrow board lengths, no slatted boards and though single furrow reversibles are appearing, one way ploughs rule.
Except for winter wheat, the ploughed ground is left over winter so the weather breaks it down. Then one or two passes with spring tines, even just harrows, or still lumpy/heavy may with discs. These will be barely 3-4m wide. No multitool bars, cages , roller wheels etc and no one worrying about compaction so no duals or tracks for that reason (but for traction).

http://www.farmingsimulator19mods.com/c ... v1-0-fs19/

Lots of independent cultivator makers, all sort of colours, same basic shape/design.

Seeding and Planting
For seeding the drills are coulter and gravity pipe. Hard to find UK classic brands for these drills eg MF29 that morphed into MF30s that seem to ruled the 60s and 70s as well
These are passable:
https://www.kingmods.net/en/fs19-mods/h ... ill-semoir
http://www.farming2015mods.com/farming- ... eed-drill/

Harrows were often towed behind drills to cover and then on lighter soil the planted field would be rolled to retain moisture.
http://www.farmingsimulator19mods.com/c ... v1-0-fs19/
Yes they were a pain to connect up!

For some specific crops or say smaller vegetable growers, a one pass approach with a rotavator was possible/desired. This Howard is a classic UK brand.
https://www.farmingsimulator19.com/farm ... r-30-v1-0/

Precision drill for beet and other field veg.
http://www.farmingsimulator19mods.com/o ... -0-0-fs19/

Can't find a UK brand version and this has air drive - should be gravity fed not air blown.

Potaoes
None of that modern destoning, ridging, windrow stuff that is modern potato growimg (and that you can't do in FS19 anyway :) ) . Semi manual planting:
https://www.simulatorgamemods.com/fs19- ... -stara-v1/

Afraid can't find UK brand/style version.
Diggers to get them out of the ground then manual pick up into baskets and then into a low trailer or increasingly into boxes (not pallet boxes) put on flat bed by front end loader. I think with this one mod and other digger types they dump on floor but you can pick up with trailer autoload or the potato pallet box kit. Or they artificially 'tank' the crop and then you unload into pallet or trailer
http://www.fs19mods.com/potato-digger-v1-0-0-0-mod/

Depending on scale of farm starting to see these:
https://www.modhoster.com/mods/potato-harvester-z609
https://www.kingmods.net/en/fs19-mods/k ... pyrus-z653
or even:
https://www.farmingsimulator19.com/farm ... ster-v1-0/
But can't find right UK or western European looking one. Need a Standen modder!

Grassland
Hay is king , silage exists but no until more specialsied large dairy herds appears towards 60's.

No disc mowers...
http://www.fs19mods.com/lizard-pull-sic ... mower-mod/
http://www.farmingsimulator19mods.com/k ... v1-0-fs19/

No hay bobs, spiders or 4 rotor tedders or rakes. I can't find a functioning tedder for the period . At a push, some smaller less well off farms would be still using horse drawn kit converted to tractor pulling:
https://www.kingmods.net/en/fs19-mods/horse-tedder

Rakes would be like this... (in UK would yellow and be called Vicon Acrobats and in RL could be set up to tedder as well...)
https://fs19.net/farming-simulator-2019 ... -510-v1-0/

A lot of farms are still collecting loose hay with huge tractor mounted forks and putting imto ricks! But lets be modern (!) and assume baling. All small balers. The only really suitable one that works is the real nice IH but more 60s than 50's . No bale thrower please... All bale handling is MANUAL! Some clever folk might have a bale elevator for loading off trailer and into the barn. So you need an auto load to represent all that.

https://www.kingmods.net/en/fs19-mods/kikinda-autoload
Typical small four wheel trailer - four wheel to keep weight off small tractor draw bat (no trailer brakes...).

Other stuff
Everthing is just.. smaller in scale. Suger beet or potatoe specialists will have some special lifters, even direct into trailers or into pallet boxes on trailers. No slurry as everything is on straw and that is why so much straw used and not chopped. Ourdoor piggys but some bigger sheds appearing, ditto chickens. No massive dairies or auto milkers (not that anyone has built a proper dairy/milking set up FS19 yet...) and still going into churns - those small barrel things that everyone uses as junk decoration on maps :) - which are left at farm gate then picked up by Milk Board.

All thoughts welcome!

Interesting read, thanks for posting. I love the old equipment. I'd like to try something like this, but I'm on console so I wouldn't have as many options, but there are a few.
