Gotta question about cows...

I noticed that one of the foods you give to the cows is hay/silage. Does that mean you have to do both or one or the other? And also TMR, do you have to combine hay, silage and straw and just hay and silage?

can use hay or grass and yes hay, silage and straw for TMR.

Gday Electsilver8, cows require powerfood (TMR) which is a mix of silage, hay and straw, as well as TMR cows also need straw for bedding (which then gives you manure), grass and water.
The in game mixer wagons have slider indicators that show whether you have the correct mix for TMR (level bars will change to green) or if you need to add more hay, straw or silage for the correct mix.
You can add these to the mixer wagon either loose or just dump a whole bale in the top.

Actually if you are feeding them tmr, the only other things you need to give them are water and straw.

In 17 you could make TMR with just hay and silage, skipping the straw. I don't know if it's the same in 19

In 17 you did not need straw. It was optional and could be 0-30% of the total mix.

At least with the base game mixers. I believe there were mod mixers that allowed different ratios.

very possible if dealing with the modded mixers, but most modded ones my friends and i used in 17 were some of the base ones from 15 that someone converted over so they used all 3. I myself have not seen a modded mixer that did not require all three, but that does not mean they are not out there.

Not true.
Technically adding straw to the TMR in FS 19 is just a waste of a straw bale.

FS 17 only required hay and silage to be mixed to make TMR and it's the same for FS 19. Straw is not required tot make TMR in the mixer wagons and I've never added straw as I only use the straw for bedding.

Straw is not "Required" in TMR, it is used as a "Filler" to save on valuable hay and silage, but only a partial % of the mix is allowed as straw.
If a MOD 'Required" Straw, then the MOD is/was in error.

If you check out some of the posts on the second page of the thread you linked, there are people saying straw isn’t needed.

You can make it 50% hay and 50% silage. Most people just put straw in as it’s easy and cheap.

In terms of bales TMR takes 2 Straw 1 Hay 1 Silage for a perfect mix.
