Hay is traditionally dry grass, certainly is in the UK and many other places. Depends what you are used to making hay from though I suppose.

Anyways... ‘bout those Vicon/Kverneland mowers... awesome piece of equipment!

I like the swath options on it.

Could be true in the uk. That's why I said in my opinion. In over 100 years of farming and six generations we never call grass hay. We have always put alfalfa in with orchard grass and Timothy.

No could be about it, dry grass is definitely hay. Just as dried alfalfa is hay or dried Timothy grass is hay. it's more to do with the fact the crop is dried before storage than the specific plant.

I get what your saying. On qualification standards for like judging or charging more there needs to be a certain amount of alfalfa not just grass.

Not sure how many years or generations the wiki has been around, but there it is.

Fyi wikipedia isn't a credible source. I know people call it hay farmboss. I don't though and it isn't up to my standards. I wouldn't pay 2 dollars for a small square bale of grass.

Well you should consider it a credible source, it proves your point.
It also proves Ritchie is right, that dried grass is hay.
As you said, hay is better hay with alfalfa (as well as other things) mixed with it.
I hope you didn't take offense just because it was me that posted the link.

I honestly didn't read it cuz I'm unloading hay at the moment. Honestly though since it was from I figured it was a dig at me. My apologies.

I know you're a real farmer. Were you unloading real hay or FS hay?
I know it's hard work, and I probably wouldn't survive long, but I often wish I could work in the country away from the hustle and bustle.

Real life. Just finished up not too long ago. I posted some pictures in the real life farming pictures thread in off topic section. Yeah I love country life. Not every day is long, some days I'm home by 3.

And if you really want to live in the country, you need to go up to the places with one lane roads where you drive an hour to the nearest grocery store.

When I was growing up(1950's/1960's) to have hay on our farm it had to have clover/alfalfa/Timothy seed mixed and broadcast in the field. straight grass was called grass/junk. If there was either sorghum/sudan grass mixed in then it was haylage. My dad and granddad also called the bales by the main product in the bale. Timothy, alfalfa, clover, along with the word hay. This was in east central Illinois, west central Indiana. So I think that the right word for the baled product is regional.
