Using fertilizer spreaders for seeding?
I’m curious if anyone has seen any mods ever that use fertilizer spreaders for seeding. Growing up, the farmer I did chores for would use his spreader to seed hay fields or wheat. And that lovely new amazone spreader would be perfect for it. Thoughts?

Re: Using fertilizer spreaders for seeding?
I like this idea. In my area almost all the winter wheat is seeded with a dry fertilizer spreader then incorporated with a du-all seedbed finisher. I have heard of some farms in Arkansas who broadcast spread their soybean seeds as well then use a hipper roller to bury them into rows.
Edit: added a few pics of how winter wheat is done over here just for fun.
First the wheat seeds mixed with fertilizer gets broadcast spread over the field.
Then a du-all seedbed finisher is passed over the field to mix it into the soil.
All the additional fertilizer and fungicides are applied by cropdusters.
Then the wheat gets harvested in May.
The straw gets burned after harvest. Note: the wheat field is behind this cotton field in the pic.
Then the field is re seedbedded and planted with soybeans.

We seed our oats with our hay using an old idea seeder that throws it on top. Then we come with a drag to incorporate it. Our wheat we use a drill.

We had the co-op broadcast oats for us with a floater last year as a cover crop. My dad got about half of it disked in before it started raining haha

I would love a feet spreader that let you spread seed. That's how I do it IRL.
Plow, harrow, spread seed then drag an old gate over it to cover the seed. Works very well IMO

Years have failed my memories. He seeded oats, not wheat with his spreader.Illinois Farmer wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 9:33 pm We seed our oats with our hay using an old idea seeder that throws it on top. Then we come with a drag to incorporate it. Our wheat we use a drill.

Re: Using fertilizer spreaders for seeding?
When I was growing up we had a seeder/fertilizer spreader that bolted to the drawbar on my grandpas Farmall H and ran off the pto. It held one 30 pound bag of seed. I believe that converts to about 60 liters. We had 5 gallon buckets we would mix the seed in and then put in the spreader/seeder. we then used a chain harrow behind dads VAC Case(1940's) to incorporate it into the soil.

There's a farmer near me who sows rapeseed off the back of the combine header when cutting wheat or barley, and I've ploughed beans in after they were scattered on the surface.

Re: Using fertilizer spreaders for seeding?
When I farmed years ago, we sowed all of our winter wheat with a spreader. We would take the load of wheat to our fertilizer dealer and they would blend the wheat with a batch of fert and we would spread it on the fields. We would then do a light discing to incorporate the seed and fert into the soil. And I have planted soybeans the same way, as a last measure.

I use an international Harvester 6-2 seed drill. It is a 28 row and has a small seeds box, like the stars scarifiers in Fs19 and Fs17. It sows canola, but I use a vicon spreader to spread sorghum seed. It's a whale tail version.
