Precision farming and crop sensor

Post by mexel75 »

Hi,

two questions regarding the use of a crop sensor(either internal or external sensor).

First; fertilizing without a crop sensor still varies the application rate depending on the crop and soiltype. So why use the crop sensor?

Secondly; can a disc spreader precision fertilize as good as a sprayer? Im mean a sprayer can turn on/off the individual nozzles. But a disc spreader shouldn't be able to be that precise.

Depends on your definition of precise, they can run of a map and speed up and slow down to add more or less fertilizer depending on what part of the field needs what so it’s pretty accurate. There’s no shutoff for individual rows like a sprayer but that’s also not what your trying to accomplish with a spreader and also why sprayers exist, different tool for different jobs

If no crops are planted, be sure to select the crop you're planning to have in the field first, as that determines how much fertilizer that should be used.

No comments about the reason for using the crop sensor? When it seems to work perfectly without it.

I think you use the sensor when spraying herbicides

Is here no one that can tell me if you really need the crop sensor? I would have thought that this would be a pretty basic question for you FS experts :)

For PF, put slurry or manure down using a "sensored" applicator before planting. The Crosetto spreader mod has the JD Manure sensing feature and is much less hassle than the slurry applicators, IMO. Plant without additional fertilizer. After your crop has emerged, apply fertilizer with the sensor turned on.

It is my understanding that using the crop sensor improves the environmental score, which then improves yield/price.
