Gate Swing

I am trying to make gates swing one way if you approach from 1 direction, and the other way if you approach from the opposite direction..basically I want the gates to swing away from me..I have tried setting up a new trigger and that sent me flying when I hit the other trigger...so I tried slowing down the animation..but the gate still snaps to closed when I hit the other trigger..I currently have the triggers back a ways and offset so I have to stick to one side until I am through the gates, surely there is a better way!
