Deciduous Trees: Not a Bug, More Like a Suggestion

Post by bza95 »

Something I wish the devs would change in a patch is the way the game handles Deciduous trees (that is, hardwoods such as Oak, Maple, Birch, and Elm, as opposed to the Pine and Spruce softwoods which are felled by machines). The physics and collisions for hardwoods are just completely broken.

Softwoods (Pine and Spruce) are, in game terms, just a straight tube with a branch texture applied over the top - the branches have no physics or collisions, and when it comes to moving and loading the logs they behave pretty much as you'd expect them to.

The Deciduous hardwoods are just a mess, all the main branches are modelled, but when you chop them off for both the main trunk and the branches you get really weird collisions around them, they don't stack up nicely in a trailer or pile like the softwoods do. You also get really weirdly assigned weights, so like a small branch or a bowl-sized piece of wood from an oak can weigh several hundred kilos, meaning you can't pick it up and throw it in a trailer or chipper.

I just think it would be better if these hardwood trees were handled similarly to the softwoods, just the main trunk is modelled and has physics, while the rest are just a bushy texture applied over the top and which are removed when you delimb. It would be nice if the hardwood tree timber was as easily handled and stacked as the Spruce and Pine.

Small branches have small weight Indeed. When you find them to have relevant weights is cause on delimbing they inherited some piece of collisions from the main trunk. -edit- you can see them by pressing once <F5> with enabled console -/edit- That's the reason they won't be lifted by hand or fit the chipper or on a trailer

Given you this explanation of the "why" I absolutely agree with what you wrote, feeding an oak on the chipper means keeping the chainsaw always on
Guy, if you're gonna ask for help remember that we're not beside you in front of your screen. So, please, help us helping you by giving us some details such as log.txt, hardware details...

And remember, this is a forum. It is different from Twitter. Here you can, no, you MUST use more than 150 digits to explain your thoughts
