What I do... sometimes when not playing with Seasons.
Plant > Fert > Herb > Fert.
Plant either with fertilizer or fertilize directly after. Once this is done... run herbicide, it will remove the darker color from the field. Easy to know exactly where you have been. Once the herbicides are down, immediately follow it with your 2nd run of fertilizer (remember, the field is NO LONGER the DARKER COLOR - FIELD STATE has CHANGED) 2nd FERT STAGE now possible. Now, you're planted and will have 0 weeds on YOUR field and already at 2nd Fert stage even before 1st growth stage.
If you want to make things a bit easier, I simply turn crop growth off while planting, and then turn it back on during the process of running the 2nd Fert stage, after herb is already out of the way.
