That verge doesn't look too tall although that golf does seem to ride a bit lower than a late 90s hatchback.

The verge is not the point.
You cannot expect the car driver to hop over the verge.
You have to give the car driver the opportunity to use any evasion point or property driveway instead of forcing him to do weird stuff.
The escort vehicle driver already was an *$#%§*, the combine driver was the next one. Both stubborn, both lacking intellect.

The escort vehicle driver did what he could to persuade the golf driver to stop. If I see an escort car coming in my direction I stop and mind to reverse to the last place where I could fit my car, I don't swear against the escort and proceed.
All this said the combine driver should have stopped before destroying the car and allow the driver to escape at least in the house yard
