how to change stock game sounds?

good day everyone,

i would like to mute multiple environment sounds that are in the base game, through a mod. instead of replacing the actual sound file in the game files. is that possible? if so, how? i guess something needs to be put into the modDesc.xml but i have no idea what.

On PC in GENERAL SETTINGS MENU the environment sounds can be set a percentage level from 0 to 100 or set off

that is correct but some sounds like the crows flying away will still be audible.
