XBox controller disconnection on PC

I noticed a thread from 3 years ago about an issue where an XBox controller won't work once it's been disconnected while the game is still running, requiring a complete restart of the game. The thread said [SOLVED], but clearly wasn't, and I can't find anything else on it. It's super easy to recreate, just start the game, turn your controller off and back on, and you'll see it won't work again without a restart. It was said in the other thread that is was a hardware issue, but it's clearly a software issue, as I can replicate it on three different computers, and no other games have this problem (unless they have a software issue as well). So is there a fix, or will there ever be one? It's highly annoying, to the point of no longer wanting to play the game. Thanks.
