Workers: a plea

Post by CesarMyChavez »

I made this account to make this one and only post. It is a desperate scream into the void; a defiant hope that if I stare into the Giants abyss, it will, someday, stare back.

I beg you to fix workers. All I wanted was a happy Sunday on my cute little farm, forcing a bowling alley in the middle of nowhere to buy 500 tonnes of strawberries, as is my God given right. Instead, after sending my worker on a nominally simple 'Go To' task, it ends up impossibly stuck. Several hours of hopeless ramming later and I lose the cargo and equipment. Enough is enough.

Oh you want to send Worker J back to the yard? No, that 'target is unreachable' so they'll go to Indonesia and start a nice little family instead. Task worker B on a field? Great, I hope you're a Jackson Pollock fan. Meanwhile you're paying Worker G to floor it into a tree until you notice.

Who are these workers? Are we roleplaying aliens delivering new technology to an exotic planet? Are we watching its primitive denizens and their underdeveloped smooth brains fumble around for a lark?

Or are they engaging in coordinated, mass civil disobedience? I may have ruined your local economy/ecology as a feudal agro lord and made a mockery of your traffic laws. But the strike worked. I cave. I'll pay hundreds of thousands for a new Worker Union contract. I'll pay them enough so their little worker children can go to university and choose a more suitable career path than their parents. Just please make it stop.

I'm not a fancy fangled programmer. I'm just a humble back country digital farmer. But it seems to me that if a Roomba can figure out the layout of my room, surely a worker - couple lines of code in a game - can regognize the dimensions of a field or go around an obstacle. I will die on this hill.

But alas. Giants is probably busy releasing the new Finnish Tyhmä small tractor DLC. Amazing. So if we're not getting better workers here are some alternatives:
  • A kindergarten placable so workers can learn what shapes and lines are
  • A stress relief feature that let's you strangle chickens or NPCs
  • Building a rustic gallows and surrender to the sweet release of death
I will do anything. I will sunder my firstborn son to Giants. I will fly to Germany and 'shuck' your corn. I will never say anything bad about vinyards ever again. Just please fix workers.

The following is a translation of the post into German for maximum dev viewing convenience.

Sincerely,

A massive, and slightly disgruntled, fan

‐-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aufrichtig,

Ein riesiger und leicht verärgerter Fan

Totally agree with this post. The new DLC with new crops is depending on workers as a lot of equipment does not have bunkers. But those workers are not able to do their job on a realistic way, so you have to drive trough the crop. In singleplayer there is still no way to use a forage harvester yourself, because no worker with foragetrailer can drive nearby. So it's really time to overhaul the workers completely, as it's now holding back the game and it's future.

Yes, you took the opinion out of our thoughts and put it out there.
We need more of this, Giants, attention to these people.

A great point. But I'm not even asking for new base game features, only the functionality of existing ones. They shouldn't be that difficult to implement. Or maybe they are and I'm insane.

Take field work, for example. Everything is already there. Fields exist as a unique area that workers recognise. There's a coordinate system. There's even a handy map that tells you the field state (what bits are growing, weeds, harvested, etc). Is it so difficult to combine these elements so a worker can fully complete a field and not wind up at the bottom of a river?

What's the profit margin on time spent fixing an existing feature?

The best profit is a massive and solid fanbase of happy players.

I think there are more ppl who are content with how the game is than there are us that feel we got sold a bunch of goods on the workers. Besides, I personally know 5 ppl that play 22, nobody even takes the time to figure out the janky mechanics for sending workers to and from places. But they also don't complain about that aspect as much as I used to. I've given up on letting a half done gimmick ruin my farming.

Wish there was a "like" button. Worker performance in FS22 is pretty much inexcusable.
